NEEDS ASSESSMENT and IDENTIFICATION OF PRACTICE GAP
Embryo transfer in human assisted reproduction is a procedure in which embryos produced after in vitro fertilization (IVF) are placed into the uterus of a female. It is estimated that up to 85% of replaced embryos fail to implant, despite the selection of apparently normal embryos for transfer. Many factors have been proposed to explain the disparity between embryonic development and pregnancy rates. It has been suggested that approximately 30% of failure in assisted reproductive technology (ART) is due to poor performance in the procedure of embryo transfer, making the embryo transfer procedure a crucial step in IVF and an important skill to be mastered. The educational need for this activity was based on the 2014 gap analysis review by the ASRM CME Committee.
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
1. Define embryo transfer (ET).
2. Describe how the embryo transfer process is done.
3. Assess the factors that may affect the success of ET.
4. Analyze the benefits and limitations of utilizing embryo transfer techniques.
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of new and experienced laboratory scientists and allied health professionals involved in assisted reproduction.
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of this educational activity requires the learner to:
· View a course overview page, containing all CME and disclosure information, including acknowledgement of commercial support and disclosure of unlabeled use, prior to the start of each module.
· Complete a 10-question pre-exam prior to each module. Learners should note any pre-exam questions answered incorrectly for clarification during module study.
· Be given the option of downloading a printed syllabus containing the presentation and narrative.
· Participate in the interactive activity: Audio narration is synchronized with PowerPoint presentation that can be advanced, stopped or reversed as desired.
