The reproductive scientist’s knowledge of genetics is rapidly evolving and pushing the frontiers of genetic testing and screening. Understanding the processes associated with DNA structure and identification of mutations provides the unique ability to be able to test and screen for a wide variety of genetic conditions.  Embryo biopsy offers options for identification of single gene defects and chromosomal structural rearrangements via the use of preimplantation genetic testing. Chromosomal mosaicism is prevalent throughout human pre- and postimplantation development and can lead to genetic abnormalities, miscarriages, and stillbirths. Mosaicism can be caused by any one of numerous factors from paternal, maternal, or exogenous factors such as culture media or ovarian hyperstimulation as is needed during in vitro fertilization.  Analysis and debate on the modification of gene expression raises questions such as, if all our cells have the same DNA then why do some cells behave differently?  These topics are addressed in this course.
