NEEDS ASSESSMENT and IDENTIFICATION OF PRACTICE GAP

Since publication of the initial Women’s Health Initiative findings, use of hormone treatment after menopause for prevention of disease has decreased greatly. Conflicting opinions in the scientific and lay press are confusing to both clinicians and the public. In addition, there has been a rise in purported alternative therapies not supported by reliable evidence. Physicians need guidance in prescribing menopausal hormone therapy and interpreting the alternative approaches to management of menopause. In a 2009 survey of practicing reproductive care physicians, only 34% correctly identified the role of menopausal hormone therapy in prevention and risk reduction.  This presentation will provide evidence-based information for the care of women throughout the menopausal transition, including hormonal treatment, lifestyle modifications and preventive strategies to decrease long-term risks.

This educational activity is designed to address the Unit 5 Reproductive Endocrinology educational objectives from the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) on this topic.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

1.      Manage perimenopausal and menopausal conditions, including osteoporosis, using interventions.

2.      Describe the implications of nonhormonal and alternative therapies.

3.      Describe the long-term follow-up indicated for menopausal patients.

4.      Counsel patients regarding physical, emotional and relationship-based issues concerning female sexuality and aging.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of resident physicians in obstetrics and gynecology and other related specialties.

Successful completion of this educational activity requires the learner to:
