Earlier physical and sexual maturity of girls has led to a reexamination of guidelines for defining precocious puberty. Physicians who treat adolescents and young girls as a part of their practice need to be able to recognize and appropriately treat differences in anatomy, physiology, and frequency of disease processes for these patients. Physical changes of precocious puberty can give the appearance of physiological readiness for sexuality in a child who is psychologically not ready for intimate relationships as well as increase the likelihood of risk-taking behaviors. Recognizing abnormal pubertal development is essential for diagnosis and treatment of underlying pathology, prevention of long-term consequences and a return to normal physical development.

This educational activity is designed to address the Unit 5 Reproductive Endocrinology educational objectives from the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) on this topic.
