The most common pediatric gynecologic problem is vulvovaginitis. This condition is an inflammation of the vulvar and vaginal tissue, and accounts for as many as 50% of outpatient pediatric gynecologic visits. This educational activity addresses the appropriate terminology of AUB, and identifies methods for patient communication and assessment to determine causal mechanisms and successfully treat this condition. The pediatric gynecologic problems, from birth to menarche, to be discussed in this module include vulvovaginitis, vulvar lesions, prepubertal vaginal bleeding, trauma, foreign bodies in the vagina, sexual abuse, abnormal pubertal development and ambiguous genitalia.
