More than 1.5 million women reach menopause each year in the United States. The menopausal transition is a relatively unpredictable time of life and more than 85% of women will experience at least one symptom of menopause. The physiological transition includes a multitude of changes including vasomotor symptoms, sleep disturbances, mood fluctuations, cognitive changes, and sexual dysfunction, along with increased risk for osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Physicians play an important role in eliciting menopausal symptoms, using laboratory testing appropriately and providing patients with accurate information about menopause and its management. In a 2008 survey of practicing reproductive care physicians only 36% correctly associated symptoms within the menopausal transition. In this presentation, clinicians will learn about the wide variety of menopause-related symptoms, their causes, modifiers, and assessments. Other age-appropriate risk assessments and screenings will also be discussed.

This educational activity is designed to address the Unit 5 Reproductive Endocrinology educational objectives from the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) on this topic.
